Suggestions for the DBC Meet

Navin:Where does it go from here ?” I threw this question in the final session of the DBC Meet. And it was catapulted back to me by Diwakar. And since then I have been getting craziest possible ideas that we can do in the future meets. I really don’t know which one does click for you all but I thought I ll give it a shot and put it on the wiki, looking for better suggestions and help you get started with your craziest possible ones which we might actually like to take on.

Now DBC is all about fun, not burden. And ofcourse we have to define FUN and define the limits of FUN, then the order of it and go one by one about it. Diwakar’s interesting and catchy reviews on the films he watched, actually have forced me to think that it should be absorbed in the process and lets make it more than a book club community.

After two successful meets in two consecutive months, it is sure occurs to me that it can be more fun than an online virtual community. There can be more vectors of fun to it. So here is my take. Do come up with yours add em below and we may finally agree on the most accepted ones. Sounds Fair? Lets get started. Do also come up with your take on suggestions which you are not keen on taking further.

Where does it go from here?

The DBC can turn out to be a place where we exchange our perspectives, our ideas (even the craziest ones) on life and things. Most of it is influenced by writings, books, movies, or even music. We all have a different take on life and this could be a place to actually widen the scope of it.

There are two ways to go about it.

  1. We meet, stick to talking, recommending and reviewing different books, movies and other form of media entertainment in the meet.

OR

  1. We might actually go for just one book or a movie (all of us read or watch and come) so that in the meet we can share our perspectives of it. What we found interesting in the movie or the character. What do you think were the turning points or influencing the interesting curvatures. This might actually give you something which you might have missed.

Other Vectors

  1. I have seen few of the members who write good, really good (say Arpita, Diwakar). So we can come up with something we find interesting and have wrote or would like to share with others. A poetry, a prose, posts, incident anything. Anything that interests you and you think can interest us all.

  1. We can make this meets even more interesting, if we have views from the experts(say Seasoned Writers, Poets, Lecturers :P). Do we catch hold of em?

  1. Now that I know some of us have a very good collection of media entertainment. Ofcourse, the DBC can be a place to share media resources, books, movies, songs bla bla bla.

  1. I don’t know if you have tried it before or been to any film festival, we can actually find short films, view it on the spot and then review it, dissect it, then and there. What could have been better and How? What interests you in the film? Some of us at the meet, I found were experts at researching, and can identify different angles to it (the sociology girls and the creative architect). Well why not eat our head and brag your skills.

  1. Infact if its all about sharing perspectives, knowledge, ideas and resources, we can actually work out something down the line. Like shooting a short film or something. This seems very interesting to me and is one of the craziest things that I think that we can do at DBC.

If I get some more even weird ideas, I ll pen them and add to the list. You asked for it :P …

After we have decided Where does it go from here. We can discuss How do we take it from here.

I think that’s enough to rock your brains out, for the moment. Looking forward to a positive response with contributions, suggestions and thoughts on the proposed ones from all of you. Do participate.

Cheers !! Take care.

Have a great stress-free week ahead !!

Arpita:  I was thinking that maybe we could have some sort of book exchange scheme amongst the members.. like every member can come up with say, 3 or 4, or as many books that he or she is willing to lend, - we could exchange the names of the titles and decide upon any.. we can meet say twice a month exchange books, talk about what we have read and so on.. the same can applied to movies, music etc.. we can about the books, papers, or any interesting thing we have read or watched..

for the next meet, am thinkin of looking up theories on parallel universe, the little chat we had kind of sparked my interest in it!! :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Niki: Exchange theory suggested by Arpita is a gud take on how to proceed with the club activities. In due course of time we can also get into photography!!! Like taking photograhs of daily life of people here n there (which concern some social issues as well n then we can have them published in the local newspaper :) I know this will take a long time but we can strive to move forward in that direction.

Also if the other members agree we could move towards creating some environmental awareness by soing some kind of social activity in our respective areas...would need a brainstroming session to plan all this...more suggestions later
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Navin: Fair call Arpita, Niki !! I second the resource exchange idea by Arpita. Perhaps that what will make it an active book club community not just a review forum. And the social awareness thingy by Niki sounds very attractive to me. I am all game for it. I had a small talk with Vaani and she says the she and Diwakar have been planning to do something like this for a long time now but it didnt materialise coz not many are interested to take this up actively. Correct me if am wrong Arpita, I guess even you are open to explore such possibilities and involve in such activities. So we are already four who want to make this happen. Am sure we ll find more who would love to take a plunge in this. i guess we have lots to explore, discuss and plan for the coming meet. I am so excited. Looking forward to the next meet.

Would be great if we can make this a platform where we participate and interact, not just attend. So Guys .. Please participate and involve more actively. :) And suggestions please keep them coming. :)

Haz: Well.. xchange sounds good as well as parallel universe..navin once more a grEat initiative...anyways my suggestion is that if its a fortnight affair den why not club a list of activities for one sunday and another set of activities/theme for another sun.. for a start its ok to be random but later i suppose things gotta be more structured... although chaos has da betta ov me!!! hey wat bout theory of chaos??/

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arpita: Photography and social work! sounds fabulous! i guess everybody likes clicking photos :o) as long everyone has a camera.. regarding social awareness, here's something for animal lovers. had this anmal welfare club in college where we would go to the animal shelters in delhi and do some voluntary work. real gross if you dont like dogs, but otherwise an absolute treat! remember feeling like i had ticks crawling all over my body but still such a pleasant feeling to be around so many dogs! I dunno if this is a good idea or not, just suggesting!

but apart from all this I think we should also try and stick to the original idea, that is books - dissemination ofknowledge , ideas ecetera... and at the same time keep it as friendly as possible, really shouldnt get burdensome! We could write stuff, poems, short stiroes, or just penning down ideas that we can discuss. i guess nothing should be mandatory. joining a film club is also a good idea. i, for instance have been dilly dallying with my IHC form, maybe if others are interested it should make it more fun.. i suppose the important thing here is to promote DBC as a group where we can do a number of different things.. and the meets should be frequent. If nothing else we could learn new skills like, I am looking for some one to teach me Poker :o) so maybe there can be sessions where we do specific things - We could look up walking/ cycling treks in the city, and just generally do stuff together!

here's to us, a bunch of enthusiasts!! :D

Navin: Thank you Haz !! :) and Welcome to DBCM.. Lets EVOLVE and come up with the activities and how do we want to go about it. We can list and classify it later on .. after we know what we are actually trying to do.  And hey .. there is a theory of chaos .. :)

And once again, interesting cues Arpita. It will be great if we can do something for animals .. however i prefer if we start with social animals first.. I used to work for Cancer patients NGO (CPAA) while in college .. It ll be great if we can take up something like that. Help educate, or help needy or patients .. I was going to take this up anyways, so if anyone wants to jump in. You re welcome.

Arpita, I think am interested in the IHC thing as well.. have been delaying it for a long time myself.

Hmm .. and am also up for crazier things which has nothing to do with social awareness but is pure fun .. bole toh .. the ones Arpita already suggested... I remember back in 2006 I registered for cycle trip to Vellore from Chennai.. Somehow, couldnt make it :( Nevamind. Never too late I guess.  BTW ... Has any of you been part of something like Autorickshaw marathon, which was from Chennai to Mumbai last year .. or the amazing race challenge, which was like travelling as many places in just 1000 bucks ... it interests me to participate in such activities as well .. so if any of you happen to be as enthusiastic about it, you know whom to contact ;) .. now I know, that this will only happen with time and trust, but i thought i ll just post it to the suggestion box .. Well said Arpi - A bunch of enthusiasts !!!

And I spoke to Arpita today, we feel, that apart from talking here we can also meet occasionally to plan the meets or activities .. I wasted the last weekend, doing nothing at home but sleeping day and night .. what a waste of time !! So, if we have nothing to do on weekends, prolly we can just meet at some library or hang out at some place to discuss what and how are we going to go about the meets ...

One last thing before I end this conversation. I noticed most of us use Gmail, and I was thinking I ll add everyone to the google calendar, so that we are notified about the updates about the meet or any such activity by sms.Setting this up is very easy. Just update your phone number in your gmail settings and mail me your gmail addresses. This will solve two purposes.

1.This will keep the privacy of the users who want to keep their number private yet be notified of every single move here.

2. This will keep us all in sync with the same information at the same time.

(Note: If you are okay with sharing your contact numbers, Please mail them too)

There is technology to help us out and the technologists as well .. What say ?

HAZ: :   :  :I really dont know... am all up for whats been suggested. Arpita:

This column is now rolling with ideas!!

The rains have come, and I suppose May will be somewhat a pleasant month, now maybe I am wrong, but hell! doesnt cost to be optimistic!! was thinking why not arrange a cycyling trip over the weekend, IF the weather stays fine. Cycling in this weather is unparalleled! For all those who dont have cycles we can rent them from north campus metro station - 20 bucks for four hours I think.. pretty economical too! (but I think it is for students only, not too sure. I suspect you need an I card of some kind that needs to be deposited.)

anyway, we can ride to some place, have some coffee/ chai/ smoke etc etc.. and then do some more of that and return. It should be fun!

@haz, the IHC place costs 300 for students. otherwise, 750 for non members.

and yes, does anyone know how to play card games? wanting to learn poker and other card tricks!!!

============================================================================================================

Navin: Yippee ... Fair enough !! Cycle trip ..  Haz, Arpita Lets do it on Sunday morning. 3 is a good number to start with, am sure more of em will chip in.. it will be a perfect way to plan where we are headed with the meets ... I made a new section below, those of you who are interested in the cycling on sunday, please put in ur name and number. Yuhooo !! am excited :)

HAZ: Kool... so dat means ill have 2 rush back... and go to Ncampus!!! I'll do mah best.. Ive sat nite duty(psst: No Pun) I'll be free by 9!!still tentative will call u if confirmed

=========================================================================================================================================

Arpita: This is rather fun!!! Just one hitch I am not too sure about whether or not cycles can be hired by non students.. so if u dont have a students I-card, it might be a problem. Again, I am not too sure about this.. if anyone can else can confirm this ......

Also then I have to cycle to N campus from JNU alone :( an unhappy proposition!!!! anyhow, lets figure this out.. I will try to rope in Rashi!! Just havent gotten around to speaking to her with her work and mine!!!

Navin:  Arpita, do ask Raashi to chip in if she can. Since am joining from South Delhi, prolly i can accompany you. Will give you a call. And If cycles cant be hired by non students, we ll have to find a way out. Isnt there someone who can lend us their cycles for the day :P .. Dont worry we ll come up with something for sure. BTW guys it ll be more fun if we get more people to participate, please do ask your friends to join in and lets make this an intellectual ride. ;)
